Soapbox: Did you choose a scientific career or did the scientific career choose you?  Can you tell us about your journey into the world of science and what inspired you to pursue your particular field?

Roksan Franko: Well, I like to think that the scientific career chose me! Growing up with both my parents having backgrounds in engineering, I was raised to question everything and seek fundamental understanding in all aspects of life. That curious mindset naturally led me into the world of science. I’ve always been drawn to unraveling the intricate details that make up the bigger picture. My journey into reproductive biology was inspired by a realization of the lack of knowledge around the biological mechanisms of reproduction. I find it empowering for women to delve into this research, understanding the fascinating processes that occur within their bodies before, during, and after pregnancy.

Soapbox: During your journey as a scientist, what challenges have you encountered along the way? And if you had the power to alter one (or more) aspect(s) of the scientific culture, what would you change and why?

RF: Throughout my journey as a scientist, I’ve encountered the challenge of a lack of representation in leadership roles. Most of my professors and academic supervisors have been male, making it difficult to find mentors who reflect the diversity of the scientific community. If I could change one aspect of the scientific culture, it would be to normalize greater gender diversity in higher positions. Additionally, I would challenge the notion that one must sacrifice personal life for scientific pursuit. While the work is undoubtedly important, it shouldn’t overshadow the value of a balanced life outside of research.

Soapbox: What attracted you to Soapbox Science in the first place? Sum up your expectation of the Soapbox Event in three words.

RF: What drew me to Soapbox Science initially was the vibrant community it fosters, spanning across various countries and shining a spotlight on women in science. Having felt the absence of such a community for most of my career, I was eager to be a part of Soapbox. Often, my social circle consists of non-scientists, and explaining my work to them helps me see its broader societal impact. With Soapbox, I’m excited to share my research with a larger audience. My expectations for the Soapbox Event? Fun, interesting, and inspirational!

Soapbox: What role do you believe science communication plays in bridging the gap between researchers and the general public?

RF: Science communication serves as a vital link between researchers and the public, making scientific discoveries accessible and engaging for everyone. Platforms like yours play a crucial role in fostering understanding, trust, curiosity, and collaboration between these two worlds. Through effective communication, scientists can inspire and empower individuals to explore science, contributing to a more informed, educated, and scientifically literate society.

Soapbox: How do you think diversity and inclusion in the scientific community contribute to innovation and progress?

RF: I believe diversity and inclusion are critical drivers of innovation and progress in the scientific community. By embracing diversity, scientists can unlock new avenues of exploration and discovery, ultimately leading to a more vibrant and impactful scientific enterprise. Inclusion of individuals from various backgrounds, cultures, and experiences brings diverse perspectives to scientific research. Different viewpoints can lead to new ideas, approaches, and solutions to complex problems.
